Prescription and preventative medications
Prescription medications
With our own pharmacy on site at the East Malvern Veterinary clinic, we can provide your pet’s required medication on the spot. We stock a full range of treatments, so following your pet’s consultation you can quickly collect prescribed medication.
As with all of our services, we’re committed to delivering a high standard of service at our pharmacy, with pet medication stored correctly and our shelves always fully stocked. If your pet requires ongoing medication, you can rely on the East Malvern Veterinary Clinic to supply this for you.
Our vets also perform routine health checks for your pet every six months monitor or note any changes in their condition. This will further allow them to assess the effectiveness of the medication and to look for any possible adverse side effects. These check-ups are extremely important for your pet and will ensure that any problems are detected early.
The Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board requires that all vets comply with state legislation to ensure that pets requiring long-term medication are receiving this from a prescribing veterinarian. Please understand our legal obligations and concern for your pet’s well-being when we advise a health check is required every six months.
Repeat prescriptions
If you need a repeat prescription for your pet, please phone us at the East Malvern Veterinary Clinic before the medication runs out. This will give us time to have the prescriptions approved by one of our veterinarians, labelled, and ready for you to collect.
Intestinal worm, Heartworm and Flea Treatments
There are many intestinal worming, heartworm and flea products available, but we believe that some are more effective than others. We always have a range of products available, including tasty chews and spot on treatments. If you are unsure which product to use, our friendly staff are happy to discuss the appropriate worming and flea treatment to suit your pet and their lifestyle.
Treatment tips
- Puppies and kittens should be wormed every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age, then moved onto a monthly or three-monthly program for life. Our staff can help tailor an appropriate parasite control program.
- If your dog or cat has fleas, the ones you can see are often a fraction of the number that live within your environment! Ask our staff for advice on treating your home for fleas.
- Heartworm prevention should not be forgotten! Heartworm prevention is included in most monthly treatments, alternatively there is a yearly injection (don’t forget to keep treating for intestinal worms and fleas!). If your pet is not currently receiving heartworm treatment, please contact us.
Not all worming and flea products include tick control. With ticks spreading as far south as suburban Melbourne it is important to incorporate tick prevention in your parasite control program. This is particularly important if you often visit coastal or bush areas, where ticks are prevalent.
